How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this machine suit the person who is shopping for it? For bread machines, that comes down to loaf size, programs, the pan and how easy the machine is to live with.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the loaf you want to bake

A 1 lb machine and a 2 lb machine suit different kitchens. We note the loaf sizes each maker lists and the space the machine takes on a counter.

When size is the deciding factor, we tell you what to measure.

2. We read the specs

We compare loaf sizes, number of programs, crust settings, delay timers, dough and gluten-free settings, mix-in dispensers, paddles, pans and heating.

Makers describe their own machines, so we name the brand when we pass on a claim. We also note the warranty the maker lists.

When a maker describes a pan coating, we quote the maker. We don't say whether any pan is safe or unsafe.

3. We look at what buyers report

We read through buyer feedback and look for patterns. Common ones are paddles that stick, uneven kneading, pans that wear and loud motors.

One bad review doesn't sink a machine. A repeated complaint does.

4. We score the machines

Our scores weigh specs, features and buyer feedback against the job the guide is about. A machine that is perfect for a first loaf may score lower in a guide for serious bakers.

We spread scores out on purpose, so a 10 is rare.

5. We keep guides current

Machines get replaced, and some listings change. Many models come in several colors or bundles with near-identical names, so we check the model name and number before we link.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't say we baked with every machine we cover.

A bread machine runs on mains power and its pan gets hot. Unplug it before cleaning, use oven mitts, keep the base out of water and follow the maker's manual.

A gluten-free program is a setting on the machine. We write only about the setting and make no diet, allergy or celiac claims.
